Low Salt Meal Plans

Some people with diabetes need to eat a meal plan that is low in salt content.  We've prepared this article to help you detarmine what foods a person on a low salt meal plan can and caannot eat.

As you reach each level those foods get ADDED to your list of foods to avoid.  You start out on a Mild Low Salt Diet (as specified by your doctor)

*If On a Mild Low Salt Diet Avoid

Buttermilk
Condensed milk

Canned Vegetables (that contain salt)
Tomato juice
Tomato sauces
V-8 juice

Instant potatoes
Commercial mixes
Salted potato chips
       pretzel
       crackers
Frozen waffles
        french toast

Crabs
Clams
Lobster
Shrimp
Scallops
Abalone
Frozen Fish
Canned, Salted, Dried, Smoked or Pickled Fish
Meat or Poultry

Salt
Bacon
Sausage
Commercial dressing
Salted nuts
       butter
       olives
 
 

*If on Moderate Low Salt Diet Avoid


Ready To Eat Cereals except: Puffed Wheat
                             Puffed Rice
                             Shredded Wheat

Limit eggs to 1 per day

Limit milk to 3 cups per day
 
 

 
*If On A Strict Low Salt Diet Avoid


Artichoke
Beets
Kale
spinach
Blackeyed peas
Turnips
Dandelion
Watercress

Cantaloupe
Honeydew

Avoid regular bread

Limit milk to 2 cups per day
 
 

*If On A Severe Low Salt Diet

Beet greens
Swiss chard
Frozen peas
Carrots
Limas

Avoid shellfish (if on severely restricted sodium diet)

Allows only low-sodium milk
*Miscellaneous - Avoid On All Levels

Canned soups
Sauces
A-1
Barbecue
Chili
Meat
Soy
Boullion cubes
Pickles
Horseradish
Catsup
Mustard
All salts
Meat extracts tenderizers
Monosodium glutamate
Kitchen Bouquet

All carbonated beverages except: diet
                                 cola
                                 ginger ale
                                 Pepsi Cola
                                 Tab
