Why Me?

You might be feeling sad, angry, confused, scared and a whole bunch of other ways now that you have diabetes. But it’s important to know that feeling this way is NORMAL. Sure, diabetes isn’t fun, but there’s a job you have to do.

Someday there might be a cure for your diabetes. There might be easier ways to test blood sguars and manage your diabetes. The important thing is that you do your BEST to look after your diabetes today.

It’s important to understand that no matter what anybody ever says, you did not cause the diabetes. Diabetes just is. It's like your eye color. Some people have blue eyes and some have brown. No one knows why people get diabetes so don’t blame anybody.

Can you do the same things you did before you got diabetes? Sure. You just have to THINK more about what you're doing than most other kids. Try to think of yourself as a super-planner who is on a tight schedule.

Will your diabetes go away? No, diabetes doesn’t go away. But it’s very important to remember that you can't use bad feelings as an excuse for not taking care of your diabetes.
The things you must do for your diabetes are now part of looking after yourself. They are *no different* than the other things you *already* do and they take only a little more time. What are all the other ways you already take care of yourself: Taking baths, brushing your hair, cutting your nails, putting on sun screen in the sun, brushing your teeth, washing your hands before each meal,

So, just be the best diabetes manager you can be, and remember, the number on your meter is does NOT measure how good a person you are. It’s just a fact you use to figure out how much insulin to take.
